Northern Utah NCBTMB-MBLEX Licensing and Renewal: What you need to know
Northern Utah NCBTMB-MBLEX Licensing and Renewal has made a few changes recently, here is what you need to know.
Licensing:
- The licensing exams can be used for state licensing only.
- The exams can be taken at any time**
You have two options for the exam:
- NCETM- Therapeutic Massage which includes western modalities
- NCETMB- Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork which includes eastern and western
modalities
• Once you have chosen the exam type, you can complete the licensing exam
application and pay the $185.00 fee.
*Please note the licensing exam is not used for certification purposes
**You are not required to submit any information to take the exam, however in order to have a score report released to you or a state you will need to submit a transcript from a 500 or more hour NCB Assigned School program. The transcript must include a graduation date.
***Conversion from the NCETM or NCETMB into certification is not available after 12/31/2012.
How do I become Board Certified?
If you choose to become certified you will need to complete the following:
1. Meet the requirements for Board Certification
- Pass a national background check (cost included in fee)
- 750 hours of total education
- this can be a combination of schooling from an NCBTMB Assigned School, NCBTMB Approved Provider or an Accredited College/University. This includes your core massage therapy program and any subsequently completed continuing education hours.
- 250 hours of work experience
- Only 25 of the 250 can be volunteer work
- Complete 250 hours of professional hands-on experience over no less than 6 months from graduation
- Maintain a CPR certification
2. Apply to take the Board Certification exam by completing the “Board Certification Application”.
National Certification:
- The National Certification Application and Recertification Application are not available after 12/31/2012.
- If you currently hold a National Certification credential, NCTM or NCTMB, it will remain valid until your expiration date.
You have the following choices based on your expiration date:
- I expire in 2013/2014:
- Transition into the new Board Certification by completing the “Transition into
Board Certification” Application by your expiration date.
- Pay the Transition to Board Certification fee of $85.00.
- You would be Board Certified for an additional 2 years from your current
expiration date. This begins your 2 year Board Recertification period.
- Transition into the new Board Certification by completing the “Transition into
- I expire in 2015/2016:
You have two options: (You do not have to do anything now)- Wait until your expiration date and “transition” into the new Board Certification. You must meet the Board Certification Requirements at that time. Pay the transition to Board Certification fee of $85.00.
- Upgrade into the new Board Certification at any time once you meet the requirements. To do this you will need to:
Complete the “Upgrade into Board Certification” Application The Upgrade to Board Certification fee is $25.00
You will keep you current 2015/2016 expiration dates.
This begins your 2 year Board Recertification period.

Board Certification:
The Board Certification requirements are:
- Pass a National Background Check (Cost included in Fee)
- 750 hours of total education
o This can be a combination of schooling from an NCBTMB Assigned School, NCBTMB Approved Provider or an Accredited College/University. This includes your core massage therapy program and any subsequently completed continuing education hours.
• 250 hours of work experience
o Only 25 of the 250 can be volunteer work
o Complete 250 hours of professional hands-on experience over no less than six
months from graduation
• Maintain a CPR certification
To apply for this exam you will need to:
- Complete the “Board Certification Application” and pay the $250 fee.
- The exam can only be taken twice within 6 months. Exam attempts must be taken at
least 45 days apart.
Recertifying your Board Certification*:
- Renewal is every two (2) years
- The Recertification requirements are:
o 24 hours of continuing education
- 3 of the 24 hours must be in a research course. You can find these courses
by going to our website, www.ncbtmb.org and clicking on “Find an NCBTMB Approved Provider” located on the lower left hand side of the website. You can search by “Course Category” and click “Find”
- Only 4 hours can be in self-care courses
- Only 4 hours can be in courses less than 2 hours
o 100 hours of work experience
Hands on, Volunteering, Administration, Teaching or Teaching Assistant, Curriculum Development, Writing/Publishing in a Peer Reviewed Journal, Research
o Maintain a CPR certification
